Over that past six years TFM Aviation specialists have been involved in assessing more that 70 airlines worldwide and have prepared detailed reports that recommended adopting some of the best industry practices into the daily operations.

The operational efficiency review consists of the following steps:

  • Perform a thorough pre-visit analysis to assess processes and procedures currently in place. This review of all available operational data will assist in developing accurate statistics and focusing on the most promising areas prior to arrival
  • The TFM Team then prepares an initial savings estimate with the use of an advanced tools which measure the potential savings for a number of fuel initiatives
  • At this point, the Team proceeds to the airline premises and makes an initial briefing to Senior Management. This meeting outlines the review process and reinforces the commitment of Upper Management to the project.
  • Over the next days, key airline personnel are interviewed and additional information is gathered from various department sources. At the end of this process a debrief session is held with Senior Management to review initial findings and outline areas where immediate fuel savings could be realized.
  • A detailed final report, with recommendations and supporting documentation, is prepared and submitted to Upper Management of the airline. The financial impact for each fuel savings initiative is quantified which will allow the airline to focus on the areas with the greatest savings potential.
  • An environment impact assessment is also prepared which will sensitize the Airline Management, the Pilots and Managers to the opportunity to significantly reduce pollution by improving operating efficiency.

The TFM Team has been successful in identifying efficiency improvements that represent from 2% to 5% of the airlines total fuel budget. Actual savings potential will vary depending on the status of the Fuel Program at the airline.

TFM Aviation is presently providing fuel management and operational efficiency training for IATA, AACO and individual airlines. Over 1500 students have been trained in the last 5 years with the audience representing Airline Managers responsible for fuel efficiency, Flight Operations Managers, Flight Dispatchers and Managers from Operation Control, ATC Personnel, Finance Personnel, and Fuel Purchasers. The course can range from one to three days in duration and it is an in-depth review of all aspects of fuel and related efficiency within Flight Operations and Dispatch Departments. This training can be tailored to an airlines specific needs and the length determined to meet the objectives.

More than 30 modules are reviewed over the three-day session and topics such as Airline Culture, Cost Index Theory, C of G Management, Cost of Weight and Tactical Cost Index are discussed.

Based on our experience we would expect the airline experience a 1%-2% decrease in fuel consumption after key personnel have attended this training session.

TFM can assess the present Integrated Operation Control Center efficiency, and identify opportunities for changes to the organizational structure, the decision-making process, operational cost reduction, on-time performance improvement and delay cost management. In addition, the TFM team can evaluate and recommend flight watch processes and procedures.

As part of the review process, an evaluation and suggested revision of current policies and procedures will be undertaken to strengthen coordination among departments. This will permit informed decision-making processes that will result in cost reductions among departments throughout the organization.

Often overlooked as a key component of a Fuel Management effort, well-coordinated and efficient Ground Operations processes can have a significant impact on the overall fuel efficiency and schedule reliability of an airline. The impact can be direct in managing APU and GSE utilization in the aircraft turnaround process, as well as coordinating operations on the ground to minimize aircraft fuel consumption associated with taxi and ground delays. Indirectly, efficient ground operations contribute to airline schedule reliability, thereby minimizing the need to fly the aircraft at higher than optimal fuel-burn airspeeds to recover schedule.

TFM can review every aspect of the aircraft ground servicing and movement control process to optimize the efficient use of scheduled ground time and minimize related fuel consumption.

A fully integrated Operations Control process enables an airline to maximize benefits of a well-designed Fuel Management Program. Optimal flight planning, focused fuel management procedures in flight, efficient ground operations and fuel-related maintenance support all provide the required foundation for fuel-efficient operations.

However, without a well-coordinated operations control process, many of the cost and operational benefits of a Total Fuel Management program will not be realized.
